DATE CENTER SKID
ESSENTIALS
Skid Types
Combilift material handling equipment is suited to a wide range of skid mounted equipment used throughout data center manufacturing, construction and installation. Typical applications include transformer skids, switchgear skids, modular power skids, cooling skids, chiller skids, UPS skids, battery skids, mechanical skids, pump skids and prefabricated equipment skids. These loads can vary significantly in size, weight and centre of gravity, so handling requirements often differ from one system to another.
For larger and heavier data center skids, the Combi-SC and COMBI C-Series provide the capacity and manoeuvrability needed to move substantial modular systems safely. The Combi-CB and Combi-CBE are well suited to smaller electrical skids, equipment frames and power modules where space is restricted.
This allows Combilift to support a broad range of data center skid handling applications, from component movement and assembly through to staging, loading and final positioning.
Skid Weights
Data center skids can range from relatively compact electrical assemblies to large modular systems weighing many tonnes. Smaller skid mounted equipment may fall below 2,500kg, while medium and heavy systems can range from 2,500kg to 25,000kg or more. Large prefabricated modules and containerised infrastructure can reach weights of up to 35,000kg.
Combilift offers handling solutions across this range. The Combi-WR4 is suited to smaller assemblies, while the Combi-CB and Combi-CBE cover medium-capacity applications. The COMBI C-Series extends into much heavier load classes, and the Combi-SC provides a high-capacity option for large modular or containerised systems.
Weight alone does not determine the correct machine. Skid length, width, centre of gravity, fork position, ground clearance and available manoeuvring space must also be considered when selecting suitable skid handling equipment.
Equipment Selection
Selecting the right skid handling equipment depends on both the load and the environment in which it needs to operate. Skid weight, length, width, centre of gravity, access routes, floor conditions and final positioning requirements all influence machine choice. The best solution should provide sufficient capacity while also allowing the operator to move and position the load safely within the available space.
The Combi-SC is suited to very large modular skids and containerised infrastructure. The COMBI C-Series is ideal for long and heavy transformer skids, cooling skids, power modules and switchgear assemblies. The Combi-CB and Combi-CBE provide compact multidirectional handling for electrical skids and smaller power systems where turning space is restricted.
For warehouse and component handling, Aisle Master supports narrow aisle storage, while the Combi-WR4 is suited to smaller electrical assemblies and precision handling tasks.
Handling Challenges
Heavy skid mounted equipment can be difficult to move because of restricted access, awkward dimensions, high centres of gravity and limited turning space. Many data center skids also contain sensitive and high-value electrical, power or cooling components, making load stability and controlled movement particularly important.
Conventional forklifts may require significant space to turn when carrying long or wide loads. Combilift multidirectional forklifts allow operators to travel sideways with the load, helping reduce the space required to manoeuvre through production areas, staging zones and restricted access routes.
For larger loads, the Combi-SC provides high-capacity handling for oversized modular systems, while the COMBI C-Series offers controlled movement for long and heavy equipment. By matching the machine to the load profile, operators can reduce unnecessary repositioning, improve visibility and maintain greater control during skid transport and positioning.
Project Stages
Skid handling requirements can change considerably throughout the lifecycle of a data center project. During fabrication and assembly, steel frames, electrical systems, cooling equipment and other components may need to move repeatedly between workstations, testing areas and storage zones. Once completed, the finished skid must then be staged, loaded and prepared for delivery.
Combilift equipment can support skid movement through fabrication, assembly, testing, storage, staging, loading, unloading and site logistics. Aisle Master and the Combi-WR4 can support component storage and internal movement, while the Combi-CB, Combi-CBE and COMBI C-Series can move completed equipment skids through production and assembly environments.
For large modules and heavy prefabricated systems, the Combi-SC can support external yard movement and site handling before the equipment reaches its final installation position.
Indoor & Outdoor
Data center skid handling often involves a combination of indoor manufacturing areas, warehouses, external staging yards and project sites. Each environment presents different requirements in terms of space, capacity, emissions, ground conditions and manoeuvrability.
Indoor applications may require compact dimensions, electric power and precise control, particularly when moving electrical skids, switchgear, UPS systems or smaller power modules through restricted production areas. The electric Combi-CBE, electric COMBI C-Series options, Aisle Master and Combi-WR4 are well suited to these environments.
Outdoor handling can involve larger transformer skids, modular power systems, cooling equipment and prefabricated infrastructure. The COMBI C-Series and Combi-SC provide the capacity and flexibility required for heavier loads in external yards, staging areas and project sites, helping support movement from manufacturing through to installation.
Load Dimensions
Skid weight is only one part of the handling requirement. Load length, width, height, centre of gravity, fork spacing, ground clearance and available turning space can all affect which machine is suitable. A relatively light skid may still require specialist handling if it is particularly long, wide or difficult to approach.
Multidirectional models such as the Combi-CB, Combi-CBE and COMBI C-Series are particularly effective for long or wide skid mounted equipment because they can travel sideways while maintaining control of the load. This can reduce the turning area required and make it easier to move equipment through narrow production routes or restricted installation zones.
Larger structural frames, transformer skids and modular power systems may require the higher capacity of the C-Series or Combi-SC. Assessing the complete load profile helps ensure the selected equipment provides the required stability, clearance and positioning accuracy.
